Money basics

Step 2 of 6

Make a simple plan

A budget is just a plan for your money. It helps you decide where your money goes before it's gone.

A BudgetA plan for where your money will go, so you know what you can spend before you spend it.More in the glossary sounds hard, but it’s really three steps:

  1. Write down your take-home pay.
  2. List what you have to pay, like rent, utilities, food, and getting to work.
  3. Subtract. What’s left can go to wants and savings.

Needs and wants

Needs are things you must pay for to live and work, like rent and groceries.

Wants are nice to have, like eating out or streaming shows. Wants aren’t bad! But when money is tight, pay for your needs first.

You can write your plan on paper, in your phone’s notes, or with our budget tool.
